How to jump start a car.
Materials:
- Jumper cables
- Another running vehicle
Safety Precautions:
- Park both vehicles in a safe and accessible location.
- Apply parking brakes on both vehicles.
- Turn off engines and remove keys from ignition.
Steps:
- Locate the Batteries: Open the hoods of both vehicles and locate the batteries. They typically have black and red terminals.
- Connect the Red Cable: Connect one end of the red jumper cable to the positive (+) terminal on the dead battery and the other end to the positive (+) terminal on the running battery.
- Connect the Black Cable: Connect one end of the black jumper cable to the negative (-) terminal on the running battery.
- Connect the Other End of the Black Cable: Do not connect the other end of the black jumper cable to the negative (-) terminal on the dead battery. Instead, clamp it to an unpainted metal surface on the dead vehicle, away from the battery and fuel lines.
- Start the Running Vehicle: Start the running vehicle and let it idle for a few minutes.
- Try to Start the Dead Vehicle: Turn the ignition switch on the dead vehicle to the "start" position. If it does not start immediately, wait a few minutes and try again.
- Remove Jumper Cables: Once the dead vehicle has started, disconnect the jumper cables in reverse order:
- Remove the black cable from the unpainted metal surface on the dead vehicle.
- Remove the black cable from the negative (-) terminal on the running battery.
- Remove the red cable from the positive (+) terminal on the dead battery.
- Remove the red cable from the positive (+) terminal on the running battery.
Tips:
- If the dead vehicle does not start after several attempts, let it rest for a few minutes and try again.
- Ensure that the cables are making good contact with the terminals.
- Do not leave the vehicles connected with the jumper cables for an extended period, as this can drain the running battery.
- Consider purchasing a portable jump starter for added convenience.
